Fabriano Forum UNESCO 2015

Friday, 4th September 2015, the foundation ‘Fondazione Gianfranco Fedrigoni, Istituto Europeo di Storia della Carta e delle Scienze Cartarie (ISTOCARTA) has hosted representatives of the Creative Cities of UNESCO from China, USA, South Korea, Italy, Lebanon, France, Haiti and Senegal, who participated in the second edition of the Forum UNESCO in Fabriano – organised by the Association Deca  and the Municipality of Fabriano- an occasion to meet and share experiences between similar real-life situations recognised as being “creative” for different reasons (music, literature, craftsmanship, design, media arts, gastronomy, cinema). Fabriano, in fact, has been recognised by UNESCO since 2013, and included in the network of creative cities for its huge erudition and ancient tradition in craftsmanship, whose secular paper-production is certainly a substantial part of what it has always generally been termed as,  “the paper-manufacturing city” par excellence. The representatives of the creative cities were able to visit the archive  ‘Archivio delle Cartiere Miliani Fabriano’, head-offices hosting ‘Fondazione G. Fedrigoni ISTOCARTA’, accompanied by the co-ordinator Mrs. Livia Faggioni, in the discovery of the ‘paper reality’ known throughout the world – today the FABRIANO paper-mill belongs to the Fedrigoni Group of Verona – through documents which date back to 1782 (the year of the foundation of the paper-mill ‘Cartiere Miliani’), pertaining to the first enterprise archive recognised by experts from institutions as being of “huge historical worth” in Italy (20th July 1964), and for its enormous scientific and technological heritage (over nos. 9.000 pieces including moulds, screens, punches etc. – tools for the hand-and-machine manufacturing of paper since 1846) which ISTOCARTA, in cooperation with ICCD –‘ Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione e la Soprintendenza per i beni storico artistici ed etnoantropologici delle Marche’, is restoring and compiling into catalogues in order to conserve and enhance the heritage through its quality and quantity unique in its type, which has supplied and is still supplying a valuable contribution to the study of history and sciences of paper-techniques both in Italy and throughout the world.
