The Letters of Paoluccio di Maestro Paolo of Camerino to Francesco di Marco Datini | Advance Registration Required
On the occasion of the Fabriano Carta è Cultura festival, Fondazione Fedrigoni Fabriano will host the presentation of the book “Le Marche, il Mediterraneo, l’Europa. Lettere di Paoluccio di maestro Paolo di Camerino a Francesco di Marco Datini (1395-1411)” by Emanuela Di Stefano on Saturday, 12 September, at 5:00 p.m. in the Sala Forme of the Historic Miliani Paper Mills Complex. Following presentations in Prato and Camerino, the book now arrives in Fabriano.
Published by Firenze University Press and the International Institute of Economic History “F. Datini”, with support from the Italian Ministry of Culture, the volume marks the beginning of an editorial project aimed at the complete transcription of the letters sent from Venice to Francesco di Marco Datini by Paoluccio di Maestro Paolo of Camerino, an enterprising merchant from one of the five civitates maiores of medieval Marche.
The collection comprises nearly 600 letters, an extraordinary source for understanding the economic and social dynamics of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries and a body of material of exceptional interest for the history of paper.
What kind of paper was traded in one of Europe’s most important paper markets between the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries? Paoluccio di Maestro Paolo’s letters to Francesco di Marco Datini reveal that a significant share of the paper sold in Venice came from Fabriano and the Marche region, valued for its quality and exported to Catalonia, Flanders, and England.
